The Chinese Educational Scenario – An Overview
When UNDP conducted the review of the Chinese Educational System in the year 2003 it was found that China had 116,390 kindergartens. More than six hundred thousand teachers and twenty million students were attached to the kindergartens there. Similarly, there were 425,846 primary schools attaching 5.7 million teachers and 116.8 million students in primary levels. There were 79,490 secondary educational institutions with 4.5 million teachers and 85.8 million students.
These are not all. There were also 3,065 specialized secondary schools that houses 199,000 teachers and 5 million students. They include 6,843 vocational training schools that engage 289,000 teachers and 5.2 million students in all. Similarly 1551 special schools were also there with 30,000 teachers teaching 365,000 students.
Above statistics is clear indication of the fact that China has been able to achieve one of the most remarkable educational expansions in recent era. The number of educated people in the country is increasing geometrically and the number of undergraduates alone has increased five fold in the recent years alone. There were 1552 higher education institutions that include both colleges and universities. With 725,000 professors and the number of students reaching the eleven million marks in the year 2003 alone the number has increased considerably even after that.
While Beijing and Tsighua are the two most sought after universities, there are more than one hundred other universities that impart training and education to students from all over the country. In any case the advancement in the field of education has been quite remarkable for a country that was very near the bottom of the ladder so far as the educational ladder is concerned.
